TAIWAN – New Foreign Recruitment Law Passed

On 31 October 2017, the Taiwan Legislative Yuan passed the new Act Governing Recruitment and Employment of Foreign Professionals.

The new law, which has no implementation date as yet, will have various benefits for foreign nationals working in Taiwan and their employers.

UKRAINE – Major Changes to Immigration Rules

Effective 27 September 2017, the regulations governing work permits and temporary residence permits have been amended, introducing changes to permit categories, validity periods, minimum salaries, government filing fees, notification and renewal rules and documentary requirements, among other changes.

Note that further clarification of the changes is expected from the Ukrainian authorities, and that there may be delays while the new regulations are implemented.

MALAYSIA – Reminder: Reclassification of Employment Pass Categories from 1 September 2017

Employers in Malaysia are reminded that, from 1 September 2017, the salary threshold to qualify for the EP I category of Employment Pass (EP) will increase from MYR 5000 (about USD 1172) to MYR 10000 (about USD 2345) per month.

NEW ZEALAND – “Kiwis-First” Immigration Changes Will Increase Costs for Businesses… But Much Less Than Originally Feared

In response to recent record-high immigration levels in New Zealand, the government announced plans last April to pursue what they deemed a “Kiwis-First” plan to revise its employment-based immigration system. After extensive public comment and debate, significant changes to the Essential Skills Visa and Skilled Migrant Visa programs are being implemented on 28 August 2017.

While new income threshold requirements are expected to increase costs for companies employing foreign labor in New Zealand, the changes are less concerning for businesses than initially anticipated.  However, companies with foreign employees should still take note of the changes.
