PORTUGAL – Visa and Residence Procedures Simplified

Regulatory Decree no. 9/2018, published on 11 September 2018, took effect on 1 October 2018.

As well as implementing the 2017 amendments to the immigration law which transposed certain EU Directives into Portuguese law (see our previous alert here, the decree seeks to simplify visa application and residence permit procedures and to reduce processing times.

PORTUGAL – EU Directives Will Take Effect 1 October 2018

Decree Law no. 9/2018, published on 11 September 2018 and effective 1 October 2018, implements the latest amendments to the immigration law, which in turn were published on 28 August 2017.

As we reported here, the 2017 amendments to the immigration law transposed several European Union directives into Portuguese law:

  • (EU) 2014/66 (intra-corporate transfer);
  • (EU) 2014/36 (seasonal workers);
  • (EU) 2016/801 (students and researchers).

PANAMA and COSTA RICA – Entry Restricted for Schengen Visa Holders

Effective 13 January 2017, Schengen Area visas are no longer accepted for entry into Panama.

The policy change came after a similar step was taken by Costa Rica, where visitor visas for Schengen Area countries or Japan were also made ineligible for entry from 14 December 2017.
